Warehouse management to take place safely is supported by numerous procedures to protect workers from accidents, injuries during storage and distribution times for internal and external handling related to trucking services.
Let’s find out what these warehouse safety procedures are, what training workers must comply with to avoid hazards and keep all logistics air functional, and what employers’ obligations are under the regulations.
Warehouse management and security
By law (State-Region Agreements 2011) all activities that take place in warehouses related to distribution and storage are classified as medium risk.
It should be remembered, however, that since warehouse work can involve different types of goods and be among the most diverse, that the ultimate risk assessment in a warehouse is the responsibility of the Employer. Only he can know, for example, the mechanized automation systems of his enterprise, the series of dangerous products or places. Its obligation is to monitor the 3 types of hazards: those related to the work space, hazards from the use of equipment, and hazards regarding the health of personnel.
All issues related to inexperience, personnel misinformation, and lack of mandatory maintenance for plant engineering (Presidential Decree 462/01) are related to the responsibility of the employer.
Safety and management of workers in the warehouse
In today’s warehouses, which are much larger and more structured than in the past, automation systems such as forklifts are used in 92 % of cases, whose main risks are accidental crushing and the production of decibels above thresholds, and therefore saw the obligation to use different PPE to protect oneself.
Manually moving goods can also be risky in the warehouse, the type of risk that creates the most illnesses and accidents in Italy. For this reason, staff are required to undergo periodic training related to risk prevention and good rules of well-being at work.
Warehouse safety standards and worker training
Workers should be trained and informed of warehouse safety regulations and good practices through participation in training courses organized by the Employer with various specialized consultants that enunciate risk factors in the warehouse and how to avoid them.
Also important will be the distribution and proper use of PPE i.e., safety devices such as gloves, safety shoes, helmets, and sound-proof headphones. In work activities such as those of warehouse management, where frequent manual or mechanized transport and handling are carried out, it will be basic to use the category of PPE called mechanical hazard protection as well as the application of constant surveillance by conducting periodic inspections within the workplaces.
There will then be a person in charge of each department to implement emergency procedures who will explain escape routes and safety practices in case of danger.
